The best place to find free knitting patterns for babies is to find someone who has been knitting for years and ask if you can have some of theirs.  

 The reason I suggest this is because there is nothing new under the sun and often old patterns are simply dressed up with a new photograph and re issued. 
 My mum told me this wee gem she said the little hooded jacket that she has knitted for any baby she knows can be bought as an old pattern, 40 years old, and a recent new edition.

I personally love to wade through knitting patterns at garage sales, church fairs and market days as although you may have to pay a somthing for them it is usually as good as free.  I find that I can also buy knitting wool and needles this way too.
