Potty Training Books

There are so many potty training books available.  It makes it difficult for us to know which one to choose.  My son is not 2 yet and so I am only at the very beginning stages of 'potty training'.  One of the things I have done is read many different books and reviews by other parents to try and work out what kind of potty training solution will work best for me and my son.

I have worked out that there are two types of books on potty training.  The ones that offer you a quick fix and ones that suggest I potty train him overtime.

All of the books below offer potty training advice as well as tips for potty training.  Most of these books will also offer potty training help if you are having potty training problems.

The More Gentle Approaches To Potty Training

This book is well recommended by parents.  The author of the 'No Cry Sleep Solution' offers practical tips as well as lots of insight into how you can potty train in a positive way without the usual frustrations and stress. This book uses a gradual approach. It  also a detailed chapter on bathroom safety checks.

help potty training The Everything Potty Training Book: Professional, Reassuring Advice to Help You and Your Child Through This Challenging Time (Everything Series)
Linda Sonna

This book actually teaches you how to use 4 different potty training methods and gives compelling reasons to consider early potty training. Maybe you could start with this book as it gives a good overview of different methods, which is unusual, and then you could choose the method that would be the best fit for you.  Then you could read the book based on that method.   I love this series, it is easy to read and the information is practical and research based.

2002, Adams Media Corporation

easy potty training  The Pocket Idiot's Guide to Potty Training Problems (The Pocket Idiot's Guides)
Alison D. Schonwald and George G. Sheldon

This is a clear and informative guide which gives suggestions and ideas on things you can do to potty train especially if you are having problems.  Many parents found the suggestions helpful.

Firmer Approaches to Potty Training

The potty training books that promise to have my son potty trained in one day, a weekend or a week all sound pretty enticing I have to admit.  But what I have also noticed is that these books say their approach will only work if your child is displaying the potty readiness signs and that you may well expect accidents afterwards for a while as well.  It makes perfect sense to me to stay home and really focus on potty training for a period of time.    Maybe one of these potty training books has the key that you help you.

Nathan Azrin and Richard Foxx

If you are looking for a definite technique and programme to follow, here is the book for you. It is potty training boot camp!  This is one of those classics – a book written in the 70’s which was very possibly one your parents read to potty train you.  So be warned while you read it that it is a very dated read.  However the training principles in this book are very sound and have been deemed successful by millions of parents.

1998, Pocket - Mass Market Paperback

potty training your child  Potty Training for Dummies
Diane Stafford, Jennifer Shoquish

Personally I found the way this book was written a little off putting, as the language was very casual and chatty, however it does have sound ideas that some will find usual.  It emphasises having a potty training weekend.
